Washington (The Times Groupe)- The Pentagon announced on Friday that most of the 90 howitzers have arrived in Ukraine.
Defense Department Spokesperson John Kirby also declared that about 60% of the 144,000 rounds for the howitzers have been delivered to Kyiv’s forces.
The US has been training Ukrainian troops on artillery systems, and so far more than 220 soldiers have completed their preparations for the M777 howitzers, while another 150 are continuing to train.
On the AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel air defense radar system, 15 Ukrainian soldiers have completed training, and another 60 have completed training on the M113 armored personnel carrier, with 50 more continuing.
Last Friday, the Pentagon announced it was training Ukrainian forces on new military systems — including howitzers, radar systems, and armored vehicles — at American military installations in Germany.
Over the past three weeks, US President Joe Biden announced more than $1.6 billion in military assistance for Ukraine. Currently, funding for military and other security assistance is running out, so he requested an additional $20.4 billion from Congress.
Among the armaments supplied to Kyiv by the US are drones, anti-tank and anti-air munitions, and heavy artillery.
Biden’s request includes artillery, armored vehicles, anti-armor and anti-air capabilities, as well as “accelerated cyber capabilities and advanced air defense systems,” the US says.”
Asked how much funding remains in what is known as “drawdown authorities,” or when a US president approves the use of military hardware from existing US stocks, Kirby said some $250 million remain.
“We still have drawdown authority, and I expect we will use it,” he said. “That is why the President submitted such an early supplemental request so that if Congress acts quickly on that, we can keep these drawdown powers in place.”
