Washington (The Times Groupe)- The US announced sweeping new sanctions against Russia on Thursday, hitting a variety of individuals and entities, including four yachts linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The vessels in which Putin is “interested” include the Russian-flagged Graceful and the Cayman Islands-flagged Olympia, according to the Treasury Department. “Putin has taken numerous trips” on the boats, including a trip to the Black Sea in 2021 during which he hosted Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenko.
The registered owners, including individuals and financial entities, have also been penalized. The owners of two other boats “linked to Putin” — Shellest and Nega — were also sanctioned.
One of Russia’s wealthiest billionaires, Severgroup’s Alexey Mordashov, was one of the targets of the coordinated intra-agency actions, including Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. Additionally, the company has been added to the US blacklist.
God Nisanov, a real estate investor who is among the wealthiest individuals in Europe, is being designated for having close ties to Russian officials, as is oligarch Evgeny Novitskiy.
“Russia’s elites, up to and including President Putin, use complex support networks to hide, move, and maintain their wealth and luxury assets,” Brian Nelson, the Treasury Department’s senior official for financial intelligence, said in a statement.
The Treasury Department has shown today that it can and will pursue those responsible for shielding and maintaining these ill-gotten interests. “We will continue our sanctions and expose the corrupt systems by which President Putin and his elites enrich themselves,” he said.
