Politics10 dead in racially motivated attack at New York Tops Markets

New York (The Times Groupe)- A gunman opened fire at a Buffalo supermarket on Saturday afternoon, killing at least 10 people, according to the Buffalo Police Department.

The shooting occurred at the Tops Markets on Jefferson Avenue. Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said at a news conference that the gunman was an 18-year-old white male.

Police have taken him into custody.

Joseph Gramaglia said 11 of the victims of the shooting were black, while the other two were white.

Currently, the FBI is investigating the shooting as a hate crime and an act of racial extremism.

Gramaglia said the shooter was “very heavily” armed and was wearing a tactical helmet and tactical gear.

“The gunman had a camera that was live streaming what he was doing,” he said.

New York Senator Chuck Schumer, who is also the Senate majority leader, condemned the shooting and offered sympathy to the victims’ families.

“As he tweeted, “I ache for the victims and their families. I ache for Buffalo. I ache for the East Side community. Racism has no place in our state or in our country. I have spoken with the Mayor of Buffalo and offered any help we can provide. We stand with the people of Buffalo.”
