Huston (The Times Groupe)- The Joe Biden administration announced Thursday that it is doing everything in its power to end the nationwide shortage of baby formula.
“President Joe Biden has directed his administration to work urgently to ensure that infant formula is safe and available for families across the country during the voluntary recall of Abbott Nutrition,” said the White House in a statement. The president reached out to retailers such as Walmart and Target to address the shortage.
It has been nearly three months since Abbott Nutrition recalled several lines of powdered formula on Feb. 17.
Concerns about bacterial contamination at Abbott’s Sturgis, Michigan plant prompted the massive recall. Four infants became sick and two died.
The repercussions of that recall have caused panic.
“Angie Walther of Fulshear, Texas, told Anadolu Agency she is concerned about the immediate future of her 5 month old daughter. “I am worried that I will not be able to find formula to feed my baby,” she said.
Trying to find a formula that works for her has already required us to switch formulas after weeks of colic,” Walther continued. Previously, we were using Similac Pro Total Comfort. In February, we had to return half of the formula we had due to the recall.”
It has been a constant struggle for Walther’s family to find enough formula for Charlie, which she says has been near impossible.
Walther’s mother found some near her, so she bought as many as she could. “Since the recall in February, I haven’t found any.”
The White House announced three major steps Thursday to solve the problem: cutting red tape to get more infant formula on store shelves faster; urging states to crackdown on price gouging; and increasing formula imports.
Families desperately trying to feed their babies cannot wait until that relief comes.
Walther expressed concern that things will only get worse. “I am worried that parents will do things that are not recommended out of desperation.”
